Mubi recaptured from Boko Haram

The Nigerian army has recaptured the north-eastern town of Mobi from militant Islamist group Boko Haram, the state governor said.

BBC reporters confirmed this from a resident of the town who said that he had seen the bodies of many Boko Haram fighters.

Mubi was the biggest town under the control of the group, and it is the first the group has lost since August when it declared caliphate in areas it had seized.

Boko Haram still has a strong hold on several towns and villages in northern-eastern Nigeria. Since 2009, thousands of people including children have been killed.

Adamawa state governor Bala Ngilari said government forces had recaptured the town, in alliance with local vigilante groups and traditional hunters. ''time to rejoice'' and the insurgents were ''on the run'' he said.

The resident told BBC Hausa service that civilians are yet to return to the area due to fear of the town being attacked again by the group.
